This guide highlights several amazing places to visit in Rochester that will cost you nothing except your time.

Explore America’s History

Rochester is packed with American history as it has strong historical links to the American Revolution and Civil War as well as the Women’s Suffrage Movement of the 19th century. If you are a lover of history, one of the attractions to see in Rochester is the Tour Mount Hope Cemetery as it is the final resting place for many of those who made significant changes in order to allow people to live the lives they do today; two of the more famous sites being Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass.

Susan B. Anthony was a huge influence in the Women’s Rights Movement and she tirelessly campaigned for equality, even coining the 19th Amendment to the U.S Constitution which was implemented in 1920. Her house is situated near the Rochester Riverside Hotel and it was the headquarters of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in the 19th century and it has been perfectly preserved and restored. There is a cost of $15 per adult but, if the history of women’s rights fascinates you, this will be one trip that you will want to make.

Frederick Douglass was a slave from Maryland who fled to freedom dressed as a seaman. His dedication to abolition saw him rise in status and prominence as an author, publisher and orator as he fought to bring awareness to the horrors of slavery. He lived in Rochester for 25 years and is thought to be one of the greatest and most influential abolitionists. He is central to one of the biggest movements in American history and so a visit to his resting place is an absolute must.

Take in the Great Outdoors

Boasting over 3,500 acres of park space, beaches and canals, Rochester isn’t lacking in beautiful scenery. Genesee Valley Park is one of the oldest in the city and harbours breath-taking scenery, architecture and wildlife. Whatever the season, you will not be disappointed with the views and you will be spoilt for choice finding a perfect spot to have lunch. From the park you take the Genesee River Trail that takes you on a 24-mile journey up to Lake Ontario in the north of Rochester or, if you prefer to stroll, take the Erie Canal Trail that is a mere 7 miles and encompasses the historic and cultural heart of the city. If walking is not your thing, take a load off at the beaches near Lake Ontario where you can take a dip in the lake during the summer to cool off.
